Courses The Department of English and Philosophy offers broad curricula in two humanistic disciplines. English studies include courses that treat the nature of language, courses that explore human experience as represented in imaginative literature, and courses that develop general and specialized writing skills.
Students also are encouraged to combine their major with minors in English studies such as creative writing or technical communication to enhance their career options. Career Opportunities Knowledge and critical skills are essential to success in any occupation.
An English major indicates to prospective employers that graduates can communicate effectively and creatively, research problems, analyze data and construct effective arguments.
Career possibilities are not limited to teaching or graduate school, although these are still popular and rewarding options. Careers open to English majors also include law, government, business, publishing, advertising, technical writing and library work.
Many English majors choose a dual major or minor.
Courses in scientific and technical communication, computer science, business, journalism, telecommunication, pre-law or technology help students strengthen communication skills and practical knowledge. Curriculum The major is structured in such a way that students must meet basic distribution requirements in terms of two areas British, American and three period requirements; beyond these minimum requirements however, students are able to concentrate their elective courses in a particular area or period.
In the first year, students pursue general education requirements, complete the basic General Studies Writing composition sequence, Introductory Writing and Varieties of Writing, and take courses in a foreign language if neededmath science, the social sciences, and general humanities.
In their sophomore and junior years students continue the general education requirements and begin courses in the major: A minor must be chosen by the junior year, The final year required a senior thesis workshop seminar which is a capstone course that provides intensive work on a project designed to reiterate and extend the skills developed in the major.
Special Features The English department is one of several departments which grant undergraduates a voice in determining departmental policy. Undergraduate English majors have the opportunity to become voting members of departmental decision-making committees.
By their junior year, some students develop special interests in a specific literature area and may elect to design an individual course under the supervision of a faculty member.
All English majors have the opportunity to become members of Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honorary. Preparation for College Completing the requirements for high school graduation is necessary for admission to BGSU, but only finishing the minimum coursework will leave you unprepared for college.
Consider taking four years of mathematics instead of the three that are required. Two, three or even four years of the same foreign language is excellent preparation for college.
You will also benefit from competency in computer use. Courses that provide exposure to or training in the visual and performing arts are excellent choices.
